పేషెంట్ జీరో అంటే ఏమిటి?
ఏదైనా వైరస్ కానీ, క్రిమికారక రోగం కానీ సోకిన తొలి వ్యక్తిని 'పేషెంట్ జీరో'గా పరిగణిస్తారు. ఈ వైరస్ సోకిన వ్యక్తిని గుర్తించడం ద్వారా ఈ వైరస్ పుట్టుక, వ్యాప్తికి సంబంధించిన ప్రశ్నలకు సమాధానాలు దొరకవచ్చు. వీటికి సమాధానాలు దొరికితే ఈ వైరస్ వ్యాప్తిని అరికట్టడానికి, భవిష్యత్తులో తలెత్తినప్పుడు చర్యలు తీసుకోవడానికి ఉపయోగపడుతుంది.
కరోనావైరస్ సోకిన జీరో పేషెంట్ ఎవరో తెలుసా?
ఒక్క ముక్కలో చెప్పాలంటే 'జీరో పేషెంట్' ఎవరో తెలియదు. చైనీస్ అధికారులు కరోనా వైరస్ తొలి కేసును డిసెంబర్ 31వ తేదీన గుర్తించారు. వుహాన్ నగరంలోని సముద్ర ఉత్పత్తులు, జంతు మాంసం అమ్మే మార్కెట్ నుంచి పుట్టిన వైరస్ ద్వారా న్యూమోనియా కేసులు నమోదు అయ్యాయని పేర్కొన్నారు.
చైనాతో కలిపి ప్రపంచ వ్యాప్తంగా నమోదు అయిన 75000 కేసులలో 82 శాతం వుహాన్ ప్రాంతం నుంచి నమోదైనవే అని జాన్ హాప్కిన్స్ యూనివర్సిటీ సేకరించిన లెక్కల్లో పేర్కొంది. అయితే, లాన్సెట్ మెడికల్ జర్నల్ ప్రచురించిన ఒక అధ్యయనంలో తొలి కరోనా వైరస్ డిసెంబర్ 01వ తేదీన నమోదైందని, ఆ కేసుకి మార్కెట్కి ఎటువంటి సంబంధం లేదని పేర్కొంది.
అయితే, తొలిసారి కరోనా వైరస్ని గుర్తించిన పేషెంట్ అప్పటికే అల్జీమర్స్ వ్యాధితో బాధపడుతున్నారని వుహాన్లోని జిన్యింటన్ హాస్పిటల్లో పని చేస్తున్న సీనియర్ డాక్టర్ వు వెన్యుఆన్ బీబీసీ చైనీస్ సర్వీస్తో చెప్పారు. ఈయన కూడా కరోనా వైరస్పై పరిశోధన జరిపిన వైద్య బృందంలో ఉన్నారు.

"ఈ రోగి సీ ఫుడ్ మార్కెట్కి కనీసం 5 బస్సులు మారి రావల్సినంత దూరంలో ఉన్నారు. అతను రోగి కావడం వలన ఇల్లు దాటి బయటకి వెళ్లలేకపోయారు’’ అని చెప్పారు. ఈ కేసు తర్వాత మరో మూడు కేసులు కరోనా వైరస్ లక్షణాలతో నమోదయ్యాయని తెలిపారు. అందులో ఇద్దరికి హువానన్ ప్రాంతంతో ఎటువంటి సంబంధం లేదని చెప్పారు.
అయితే, హాస్పిటల్లో చేరిన 41 మంది రోగుల్లో 27 మందికి మార్కెట్తో సంబంధం ఉందని పరిశోధకులు గుర్తించారు. ఈ వైరస్ సముద్ర ఉత్పత్తుల మార్కెట్లో బ్రతికి ఉన్న జీవి నుంచి మనిషికి వ్యాప్తి చెంది ఉండవచ్చని ప్రపంచ ఆరోగ్య సంస్థ భావిస్తోంది.
ఒక్క వ్యక్తి ఇంత పెద్ద విపత్తుకి బీజం వేయగలడా?
పశ్చిమ ఆఫ్రికాలో 2014-16 మధ్య కాలంలో తీవ్రంగా ప్రబలిన వైరస్లలో ఎబోలా వైరస్ ఒకటి. దీనిని తొలిసారి 1976లో గుర్తించారు. ఈ వైరస్ బారిన పడి 11000 మందికి పైగా ప్రజలు మరణించగా 28000 మంది మీద ఈ వైరస్ ప్రభావం చూపిందని ప్రపంచ ఆరోగ్య సంస్థ పేర్కొంది.
ప్రపంచంలోని 10 దేశాలలో కనిపించిన ఈ వైరస్ ప్రభావం రెండు సంవత్సరాలకి పైగా ఉంది. ఆఫ్రికాతో పాటు అమెరికా, స్పెయిన్, యునైటెడ్ కింగ్డమ్, ఇటలీలలో కూడా ఈ వైరస్ ప్రభావం చూపించింది. ఎబోలా వైరస్ గునియాలో ఒక రెండేళ్ల పిల్లాడి నుంచి మొదలయిందని పరిశోధకులు గుర్తించారు.
గద్దలకి నెలవైన ఎండిన చెట్టు దగ్గర ఆడుకోవడం వలన ఆ అబ్బాయికి వైరస్ సంక్రమించి ఉండవచ్చని పరిశోధకులు పేర్కొన్నారు. వైరస్ మూలాలు తెలుసుకునేందుకు ఆ పిల్లాడి ఊరు మెలిఅండౌకి వెళ్లి, అక్కడ ప్రజలతో మాట్లాడి సాంపిల్స్ సేకరించినపుడు గద్దల ద్వారా వైరస్ సోకి ఉంటుందనే నిర్ధరణకి వచ్చినట్లు ఎంబో మోలిక్యూలర్ మెడిసిన్ లో ప్రచురించిన పత్రం పేర్కొంది.

తొలి పేషెంట్ జీరో కి టైఫాయిడ్ మేరీ అని నామకరణం చేసారు. న్యూయార్క్లో 1906లో టైఫాయిడ్ జ్వరాన్ని వ్యాప్తి చెందించిన 'పేషెంట్ జీరో' మేరీ మల్లోన్ కి 'టైఫాయిడ్ మేరీ' అని పేరు పెట్టారు. ఐర్లాండ్కి చెందిన మేరీ అమెరికాకి వలస వచ్చారు. ఆమె ధనికుల ఇళ్లల్లో వంట మనిషిగా పని చేసేవారు. మేరీ పని చేసిన ప్రతి చోటా ఆ కుటుంబంలోని సభ్యులు టైఫాయిడ్ జ్వరానికి గురయ్యేవారు.
డాక్టర్లు మేరీని ఆరోగ్యకరమైన వ్యాధి వ్యాప్తి కారకురాలిగా గుర్తించారు. అంటే.. ఆమె వ్యాధికి గురైనప్పటికీ, ఆమెలో ఆ వ్యాధి లక్షణాలేమీ కనిపించవు. కొంత మందికి వ్యాధిని త్వరితగతిలో వ్యాప్తి చెందించే శక్తి ఉంటుంది, వారిని సూపర్ స్ప్రెడర్ అని పిలుస్తారు. అలా డాక్టర్లు గుర్తించిన మొదటి సూపర్ స్ప్రెడర్ మేరీ. అప్పటికే న్యూయార్క్లో వేలాది మంది టైఫాయిడ్ వైరస్ బారినపడగా అందులో 10 శాతం మంది తీవ్రంగా ప్రభావితులయ్యారు.
జీరో పేషెంట్ అనే పదాన్ని పరిశోధకులు ఎందుకుఇష్టపడరు?
తొలి పేషెంట్ని గుర్తించడం ద్వారా తప్పుడు సమాచారం ఇవ్వడంగాని, లేదా ఆ వ్యక్తిని దోషిగా చూడటం కానీ జరుగుతుందని చాలా మంది వైద్య నిపుణుల అభిప్రాయం. ఎయిడ్స్ సోకిన తొలి పేషెంట్గా ఒక వ్యక్తిని తప్పుగా గుర్తించడాన్ని దీనికి ఉదాహరణగా చెప్పవచ్చు.
హోమోసెక్సుల్ ఫ్లైట్ అటెండెంట్గా పని చేసే గెటాన్ దుగాస్ అనే కెనడా దేశస్థుడుని హెచ్ఐవీ వైరస్ని 1980 లలో యుఎస్కి తెచ్చాడనే అభియోగంతో చరిత్రలో అత్యంత రాక్షసంగా చిత్రీకరించారు. కానీ, మూడు దశాబ్దాల తర్వాత పరిశోధకులు అతను మొదటి కేసు కాకపోవచ్చని అన్నారు. 2016 సంవత్సరంలో నిర్వహించిన ఒక అధ్యయనం ఈ వైరస్ 1970లలో కరేబియన్ దీవుల నుంచి అమెరికాకి వ్యాప్తి చెందిందని గుర్తించింది. ఈ పేషెంట్ జీరో అనే పదం హెచ్ఐవి ప్రబలుతున్న కాలంలో కనిపెట్టారు.
1980ల్లో సాన్ ఫ్రాన్సిస్కో, లాస్ ఏంజెలెస్లో ఈ వైరస్ వ్యాప్తి పై పరిశోధనలు చేస్తున్న కాలంలో సెంటర్ ఫర్ డిసీస్ కంట్రోల్ అండ్ ప్రివెన్షన్ కంట్రోల్ పరిశోధకులు, కాలిఫోర్నియా అవతల నమోదు అయిన కేసులను గుర్తించేందుకు 'ఓ' (o) అనే అక్షరాన్ని వాడారు. మిగిలిన పరిశోధకులు ఈ అక్షరాన్ని సున్నాగా అర్థం చేసుకోవడంతో 'జీరో పేషెంట్' అనే వైద్య పరిభాష ప్రాచుర్యంలోకి వచ్చింది. ఎయిడ్స్ వ్యాప్తి చెందుతున్న కాలంలో పుట్టిన ఈ 'పేషెంట్ జీరో' అనే పదం వినడానికి చాలా ఆసక్తికరంగా ఉన్నప్పటికీ ఈ పదానికి ఎటువంటి శాస్త్రీయ ఆధారాలు లేవని యూనివర్సిటీ అఫ్ ఆక్స్ఫర్డులో పని చేస్తున్న ప్రొఫెసర్ ఆలివర్ పైబస్ అన్నారు.
