దేశంలో కరోనా మహమ్మారి కథ ముగిసిందని భారత ఆరోగ్య శాఖ మంత్రి హర్షవర్ధన్ ఈ ఏడాది మార్చి మొదట్లో ప్రకటించారు. ఆయన ప్రధాని నరేంద్ర మోదీ నాయకత్వాన్ని అంతర్జాతీయ సహకారంలో ప్రపంచానికి ఒక ఉదాహరణగా కూడా కొనియాడారు. గొప్పగా చెప్పుకున్న తమ టీకా దౌత్యంలో భాగంగా భారత్ జనవరి నుంచి టీకా డోసులను వివిధ దేశాలకు ఎగుమతి చేయడం ప్రారంభించింది.
సెప్టెంబర్ మధ్యలో రోజుకు సగటున 93 వేల కేసుల స్థాయి నుంచి ఫిబ్రవరి మధ్య నాటికి రోజుకు 11 వేలకు కరోనా కేసులు తగ్గిపోవడంతో హర్షవర్ధన్ ఆ వ్యాఖ్యలు చేశారు. అదే సమయంలో రోజువారీ మరణాల ఏడు రోజుల సగటు కూడా వంద కన్నా తగ్గింది. గత ఏడాది చివరి నుంచే అందరూ వైరస్ను ఓడించామనే ఆనందంలో మునిగితేలారు. రాజకీయ నాయకులు, అధికారులు, మీడియాలో కొన్నివర్గాలు భారత్ నిజంగా మహమ్మారి నుంచి బయటపడిందని భావించారు.
భారత్ కోవిడ్ కేసుల గ్రాఫ్ను వంచిందని, దానికి ఆధారాలు కూడా ఉన్నాయని డిసెంబర్లో రిజర్వ్ బ్యాంక్ అధికారులు కూడా ఒక ప్రకటన చేశారు. "ఆర్థికవ్యవస్థ సుదీర్ఘ శీతాకాలం చీకట్లను చీల్చుకుని, సూర్యుడి వెలుతురు దిశగా అడుగులు వేస్తోంది" అని కవితాత్మకంగా వర్ణించారు. ప్రధాని మోదీని 'వాక్సీన్ గురు'గా చెప్పుకున్నారు. ఫిబ్రవరి చివరి నాటికి భారత ఎన్నికల సంఘం 824 స్థానాల్లో కోటీ 86 లక్షల మంది ఓటు వేయబోయే ఐదు రాష్ట్రాల ఎన్నికల షెడ్యూలను కూడా ప్రకటించింది. మార్చి 27న ప్రారంభమయ్యే ఈ ఎన్నికలు నెలపాటు సాగుతాయని చెప్పింది.

కరోనా కేసులను సరిగా ట్రాక్ చేయకపోతే, జూన్ మొదటి వారానికి భారత్లో రోజుకు 2,300కు పైగా మరణాలు నమోదు కావచ్చని ది లాన్సెట్ కోవిడ్-19 కమిషన్ నివేదిక చెబుతోంది. భారత్ ఇప్పుడు ప్రజారోగ్య అత్యవసర స్థితి గుప్పిట్లో విలవిల్లాడుతోంది. కిక్కిరిసిన శ్మశానాల్లో కోవిడ్ మృతుల అంత్యక్రియలు, ఆస్పత్రుల బయట మృతదేహాల కోసం ఎదురుచూసే కుటుంబాలు, శ్వాస అందని రోగులతో ఆస్పత్రుల బయట నిలిచిన అంబులెన్సులు, శవాలతో నిండిన మార్చురీల వీడియోలతో సోషల్ మీడియా నిండిపోతోంది.
కొన్ని ఆస్పత్రుల్లోని కారిడార్లలో, వరండాల్లో ఒకే బెడ్ మీద ఇద్దరు రోగులు ఉండడం కూడా కనిపిస్తోంది. ఆస్పత్రుల్లో పడకల కోసం, మందుల కోసం, ఆక్సిజన్ సిలిండర్ల కోసం, ముఖ్యంగా పరీక్షల చేయించుకోడానికి సాయం చేయాలంటూ ఎంతోమంది దీనంగా వేడుకుంటున్నారు. మందులను బ్లాక్ మార్కెట్లో అమ్ముకుంటున్నారు. పరీక్షల ఫలితాలు రావడానికి రోజులు పడుతోంది.
"నా బిడ్డ చనిపోయాడని వాళ్లు నాకు మూడు గంటలు చెప్పలేదు" అని ఒక వీడియోలో ఐసీయూ బయట కూర్చున్న ఒక తల్లి కన్నీళ్లు పెట్టుకుంటోంది. భారత్లో భారీ వ్యాక్సినేషన్ కోసం చేసిన కృషి కూడా ఇప్పుడు కష్టాల్లో పడింది. మొదట్లో స్వదేశీ తయారీ వ్యాక్సీన్ సామర్థ్యంపై వివాదం కూడా రేగింది. దేశంలో గత వారానికి 10 కోట్లకు పైగా డోసులు వేయగలిగినప్పటికీ, కొన్ని రాష్ట్రాల్లో టీకా కొరత తీవ్రంగా ఉందనే వార్తలు వస్తున్నాయి.

"ఇదంతా ఏంటి, అసలు ఏం జరుగుతోంది" అని సోషియాలజీ ప్రొఫెసర్ శివ విశ్వనాథన్ నాతో అన్నారు. భారత్లో తీవ్రంగా ఉన్న కరోనా సెకండ్వేవ్ విషయంలో ప్రభుత్వం పూర్తిగా చేతులెత్తేసినట్లు కనిపిస్తోందని నిపుణులు అంటున్నారు. ఈ ఏడాది ఫిబ్రవరి మధ్యలో మహారాష్ట్రలోని కొన్నిప్రాంతాల్లో కొత్త కేసులు ఏడు రెట్లు పెరిగాయని ఇండియన్ ఎక్స్ప్రెస్ జర్నలిస్ట్ తబస్సుమ్ బర్నాగర్వాలా గుర్తించారు. వాటిలో విదేశీ వేరియంట్లు ఉన్నాయేమో తెలుసుకోడానికి రోగుల శాంపిళ్లను జీనోమ్ సీక్వెన్సింగ్ కోసం పంపించారని కూడా రాశారు.
ఆ నెల చివరికల్లా కరోనా కేసులు పెరుగుతున్నట్లు బీబీసీ చెప్పింది. భారత్ మరో కోవిడ్ వేవ్ను ఎదుర్కోనుందా అని నిపుణులను అడిగింది. "కేసులు పెరగడానికి కారణం ఏంటో మాకు తెలీడం లేదు. అది మొత్తం కుటుంబంలో వ్యాపించడం ఆందోళన కలిగిస్తోంది. ఇది పూర్తిగా కొత్త ట్రెండ్" అని మహారాష్ట్రలోని ఒక కరోనా ప్రభావిత జిల్లాలో సివిల్ సర్జన్ డాక్టర్ శ్యామసుందర్ నికమ్ చెప్పారు.

మిగతా చాలా దేశాల్లాగే వేరియంట్లను గుర్తించడానికి భారత్ జనవరిలోనే జీనోమ్ సర్వేలెన్స్ ప్రారంభించి ఉండాల్సిందని మీనన్ అభిప్రాయపడ్డారు.
