తెలుగు రాష్ట్రాల్లో ఇప్పుడు చాలామంది నోళ్లలో నానుతున్న పేరు ఉయ్యాలవాడ నరసింహారెడ్డి. చిరంజీవి హీరోగా వస్తున్న తాజా చిత్రం సైరా నేపథ్యంలో ఉయ్యాలవాడ నరసింహారెడ్డి చుట్టూ ఆసక్తికర చర్చ సాగుతోంది. తొలి స్వాతంత్ర్య సమరయోధుడిగా ఆయన్ను కొందరు కీర్తిస్తుండగా మరికొందరు మాత్రం తమకు దక్కాల్సిన రాజాభరణాల విషయంలో జరిగిన అన్యాయంపై తిరుగుబాటు చేసిన పాలెగాళ్ల చరిత్రలో ఓ భాగంగా చెబుతున్నారు.
అసలు నరసింహారెడ్డి ఎవరు? ఆయన చరిత్రపై భిన్నాభిప్రాయాలు ఎందుకు వ్యక్తమవుతున్నాయి? ఉయ్యాలవాడ నరసింహారెడ్డి చరిత్ర 170 ఏళ్ల కిందటిది. 1847లోనే ఆయన్ను హత్య చేసినట్టు చారిత్రక ఆధారాలున్నాయి. బ్రిటిష్ పాలకులపై తిరుగుబాటు చేయడంతో హత్యకు గురైనట్లు తంగిరాల వెంకటసుబ్బారావు రచించిన ‘రేనాటి సూర్యచంద్రులు’ పుస్తకం చెబుతోంది. కర్నూలు జిల్లాలో ప్రస్తుతం ఆళ్లగడ్డ నియోజకవర్గంలోని ఉయ్యాలవాడకు పాలెగాడిగా వ్యవహరించిన నరసింహారెడ్డి చరిత్ర ఆధారంగానే ‘సైరా నరసింహారెడ్డి’ సినిమా రూపొందిస్తున్నారు.
పాలెగాళ్లు ఎవరు?
1565లొ జరిగిన తళ్లికోట యుద్ధంలో ఓటమి తర్వాత క్రమంగా క్షీణించిన విజయనగర సామ్రాజ్యం 1646 నాటికి పూర్తిగా అంతరించింది. ఆ తరువాత ప్రస్తుత రాయలసీమ ప్రాంతం కొన్నేళ్ల పాటు నిజాం, ఇతర మహ్మదీయ నవాబులు, చిన్నచిన్న రాజుల పాలనలో కొనసాగింది. టిప్పు సుల్తాన్ కాలంలో మాత్రం అనంతపురం జిల్లా రాయదుర్గం, చిత్తూరు గుర్రంకొండ కోటలను టిప్పు స్వయంగా స్వాదీనం చేసుకుని తన పాలనలోకి తీసుకున్నట్టు చారిత్రక ఆధారాలున్నాయి.
కొన్నేళ్లకు టిప్పు సుల్తాన్తో ఈస్ట్ ఇండియా కంపెనీ ఒప్పందం ప్రకారం 1792లో నిజాం పాలనలోకి రాయలసీమ వచ్చింది. టిప్పు సుల్తాన్తో ఈస్ట్ ఇండియా కంపెనీ చేసిన యుద్ధంలో టిప్పుకి వ్యతిరేకంగా నిజాం కూడా కంపెనీ సైన్యానికి అండగా నిలిచారు. కానీ 1799లో టిప్పు సుల్తాన్ మరణం తర్వాత 1800 సంవత్సరంలో నిజాం పాలన నుంచి రాయలసీమను ఈస్ట్ ఇండియా కంపెనీకి దఖలు పరిచారు. ఈ కారణంతోనే రాయలసీమను దత్తమండలాలుగా పిలుస్తారని తంగిరాల వెంకట సుబ్బారావు వంటి గ్రంథకర్తలు రాశారు.
అప్పటి రాయలసీమ ప్రాంతం.. అంటే బళ్లారి నుంచి పశ్చిమ చిత్తూరు ప్రాంతం వరకు ఒకే జిల్లాగా ఉండేది. థామస్ మన్రో కలెక్టరుగా పనిచేశారు. బ్రిటీష్ పాలనా విధానంలో వచ్చిన మార్పులకు అనుగుణంగా రైతుల నుంచి కొత్త పన్నుల వసూలు విధానం అమలులోకి వచ్చింది. అప్పటివరకూ రైతుల నుంచి పన్నులు వసూలు చేసేందుకు రాయలసీమ ప్రాంతంలో ఉండే మధ్యవర్తులను పాలెగాళ్లు అని పిలిచేవారు. విజయనగరం రాజుల పాలనలోనే ఈ పాలెగాళ్ల వ్యవస్థకు శ్రీకారం చుట్టినట్టు తంగిరాల వెంకట సుబ్బారావు వంటి అనేక మంది తమ తెలుగు చరిత్ర పుస్తకాల్లో పేర్కొన్నారు.
‘సామంతులకు దిగువన అమరం అని పిలిచే చిన్న చిన్న ప్రాంతాలను సైన్యంలోని ముఖ్యులకు, మంత్రులకు అప్పగించేవారు. అమర నాయకుల కన్నా దిగువన చిన్న చిన్న ప్రాంతాల వ్యవహారాలు చక్కదిద్దేందుకు పాలెగాళ్ళు ఉండేవారు. ప్రధానంగా అడవులు, కొండలు, రాజధాని సరిహద్దులో ఉండే ప్రాంతాల్లొ శాంతిభద్రతలు, పన్నుల వసూలు, బాటసారుల రక్షణ, బందిపోట్ల దాడులను ఎదుర్కొనటం వంటివి ఈ పాలెగాళ్ల బాధ్యతలుగా ఉండేవి.

పన్నులను నేరుగా కంపెనీ వసూలు చేసేందుకు ఉపక్రమించడం పాలెగాళ్ల ఆగ్రహానికి కారణమైంది. అప్పటివరకూ రైతుల నుంచి వసూలు చేసిన పన్నుల్లో కొంత భాగం తాము తీసుకుని, మిగిలిన భాగం రాజులకు కప్పం కింద చెల్లించేవారు. తమ పెత్తనానికి అడ్డుకట్ట వేస్తూ నేరుగా రైతులకు కంపెనీకి మధ్య పన్నుల వ్యవహారం మారిపోవడంతో పాలెగాళ్ల వ్యవస్థకు బీటలు వారాయి. అప్పటి వరకూ ఆయా ప్రాంతాలలో సామంత రాజుల తరహాలో సొంత పాలన సాగించిన వారి చేతుల నుంచి రాజ్యం కోల్పోయినట్టయింది.
1799లో తమిళనాడులోని కట్ట బ్రహ్మన్నను యుద్ధంలో ఓడించి చంపడంతో ఈస్ట్ ఇండియా కంపినీ పాలెగాళ్ల వ్యవస్థ నిర్మూలనకు శ్రీకారం చుట్టిందని భావిస్తుంటార’’ని ‘రేనాటి సూర్యచంద్రులు’లో ఉంది.
ఈస్ట్ ఇండియా కంపెనీకి ఎదురుతిరిగిన పాలెగాళ్లు ఏమయ్యారు?
బళ్లారి జిల్లా కలెక్టర్ మన్రో తమ రికార్డుల్లోని 142 మంది పాలెగాళ్ళను లొంగదీసుకోవటానికి ప్రయత్నాలు మొదలుపెట్టారు. దాంతో తమ ఆదాయన్ని పూర్తిగా కోల్పోతున్న దశలో కొందరు పాలెగాళ్లు తిరుగుబాటుకి సిద్ధమయ్యారు. ఆ క్రమంలోనే 1801లో ప్రస్తుత చిత్తూరు జిల్లా(అప్పట్లో ఉత్తర ఆర్కాట్ జిల్లా) బంగారుపాళ్యం పాలెగాడి హత్యతో మొదలైన అణిచివేత 1807లో ఆదోని పాలెగాడు అనంతప్ప హత్య వరకూ సాగింది.
వారసత్వ హక్కుల చట్టంతో వివాదం
''కంపెనీతో ఒప్పందం చేసుకున్న వారికి ప్రయోజనాలు దక్కాయి. కానీ 1843లో బ్రిటీష్ వారసత్వ హక్కులపై చట్టం తీసుకొచ్చింది. ఈ చట్టం ప్రకారం వారసత్వపు హక్కులు కేవలం ఒక తరానికే పరిమితమవుతాయి. దాంతో వారసత్వంగా సంక్రమించే మిరాశి హక్కులను కోస్తాలో జమిందార్లు, రాయలసీమ ప్రాంతంలో పాలెగాళ్లు కూడా కోల్పోవలసి వచ్చింది. వారసత్వంగా లభించే మాన్యాలు, ఇనాం భూములు, పెన్షన్ వంటి అవకాశాలు లేకుండా పోయాయి.
అదే సమయంలో మిరాశి రద్దు చట్టం మూలంగా ఉయ్యాలవాడతో పాటు నుసుం ప్రాంతానికి పాలెగాడిగా ఉన్న నరసింహారెడ్డి రెండింటిలో ఏదో ఒకటి వదులుకోవాల్సి వచ్చింది. నరసింహారెడ్డికి ఆయన తల్లి వైపు వారసులు లేకపోవటంతో నుసుం పాలెగాడిగా హక్కులు కూడా దక్కాయి'' అని తంగిరాల సుబ్బారావు తన పరిశోధక గ్రంథంలో ప్రస్తావించారు. అదే సమయంలో నరసింహారెడ్డి తాత జయరామిరెడ్డి మరణం తర్వాత ఆయన వారసుడిగా దక్కుతున్న పెన్షన్ కూడా నిలిపివేసినట్టు పేర్కొన్నారు.
బ్రిటిష్ వారికి వ్యతిరేకంగా ఉద్యమాన్ని నడిపిన నరసింహారెడ్డి
ఈ పరిణామాలతో నరసింహారెడ్డి బ్రిటిష్ ఈస్ట్ ఇండియా పాలనను ఎదిరించారు. 1846లో బ్రిటిష్ వారి మీద తిరుగుబాటు ప్రారంభించి సుమారు ఏడాది కాలంపాటు పోరాడారు. ఆ ఉద్యమానికి అనేక మంది తోడ్పడ్డారు. ఈస్ట్ ఇండియా కంపెనీకి వ్యతిరేకంగా సాగించిన ఈ తిరుగుబాటులో సుమారుగా 5వేల మంది అనుచరులు ఆయనకు అండగా నిలిచినట్టు పరిశోధకులు చెబుతున్నారు.
ఈ పోరాటంలో ఫిరంగులను సైతం వినియోగించి పోరాడిన నరసింహారెడ్డి అటు గిద్దలూరు సమీపంలోని కొత్తకోట నుంచి ఇటు ఉయ్యాలవాడ, కోయిలకుంట్ల వరకూ నల్లమలకు అటూ ఇటూ యుద్ధం నడిపారు. చివరికి 1847లొ బ్రిటిష్వారు నరసింహారెడ్డిని బంధించి ఉరి తీసి, ఆయన శవాన్ని కోట గుమ్మానికి వేలాడదీశారు. ఫిబ్రవరి 22నాడు ఆయన్ని కుందూ నది తీరంలో బంధించి, అందరూ చూస్తుండగా ఉరి తీసి మృతదేహాన్ని కోటగుమ్మానికి వేలాడదీసినట్టు చరిత్ర పుస్తకాలలో ఉంది.

తొలి స్వాతంత్ర్య సమరయోధుడు ఉయ్యాలవాడ నరసింహారెడ్డేనా?
సుదీర్ఘకాలం పాటు సాగిన భారత స్వాతంత్ర్య సంగ్రామంలో 1857 సిపాయిల తిరుగుబాటుకి ప్రత్యేక స్థానం ఉంది. అంతకు దశాబ్దకాలం ముందే బ్రిటిష్ వారికి వ్యతిరేకంగా పోరాడిన ఉయ్యాలవాడ నరసింహారెడ్డిని తొలి స్వాతంత్ర్య పోరాట యోధుడిగా కేంద్రం గుర్తించింది. ఆయన 170వ వర్థంతి సందర్భంగా 2017లో ఓ పోస్టల్ స్టాంప్ను విడుదల చేశారని ఉయ్యాలవాడకు చెందిన బుడ్డా తులసమ్మ 'బీబీసీ'కి తెలిపారు. ప్రధానమంత్రి మోదీ చేతుల మీదుగా ఈ స్టాంప్ విడుదలయ్యిందన్న ఆమె అది ఉయ్యాలవాడ నరసింహారెడ్డి త్యాగానికి గుర్తుగా చెబుతున్నారు.
అదే సమయంలో ఉయ్యాలవాడ నరసింహా రెడ్డి తిరుగుబాటుని తొలి స్వాతంత్ర్య పోరాటంగానూ, ఆయన్ను తొలి స్వాతంత్ర్య సమరయోధుడిగానూ పేర్కొనడం పట్ల కొందరు అభ్యంతరం వ్యక్తం చేస్తున్నారు. ఈ అంశంపై రిటైర్డ్ చరిత్ర ప్రొఫెసర్ కోటేశ్వరరావు తన అభిప్రాయాన్ని బీబీసీతో పంచుకుంటూ.. "నారసింహ రెడ్డిగానే ఆయన్ని పిలవాలి. వాగ్గేయకారులందరూ అలానే ప్రస్తావించారు. ఆయన హక్కులు తొలగించిన మూలంగానే తిరుగుబాటు చేశారు. ఉయ్యాలవాడ అనేది ఊరు పేరు. ఆయన ఇంటి పేరు మజ్జరి. అంతేగాకుండా ఆయన కన్నా ముందే అనేకమంది పాలెగాండ్రు తిరగబడ్డారు.
బళ్లారిలో హరి నాయకన్ వారిలో ఒకరు. అంతేగాకుండా దివాకర్ నాయర్, కుద్రిత్ ఉల్లాఖాన్ వంటి అనేక మంది బ్రిటీష్ వారిని ఎదురించారు. గురువప్ప నాయర్ కూడా కంపెనీ సైన్యానికి ఎదురుతిరిగారు. అలాంటి వారిలో కొంతమందిని ఉరితీసిన సైన్యం, పాలెగాండ్ర పోరాటాలను అణచివేసింది. కానీ నారసింహ రెడ్డికి అనేకమంది కంపెనీ బాధిత పాలెగాండ్రు కూడా కలిసి వచ్చారు. దాంతో పోరాటం గిద్దలూరు ప్రాంతం వరకూ విస్తరించినా చివరకు కడప కలెక్టర్ కాక్రేన్ కుయుక్తులకు అరెస్టయ్యి, నారసింహ రెడ్డి ఉరి తీయబడ్డారు. కనీసం తొలి పాలెగాండ్ర పోరాటం కూడా కాని విషయాన్ని తొలి స్వాతంత్ర్య పోరాటం అనడం సరి కాదు. అప్పటి వరకూ ప్రస్తావనలో కూడా లేని అంశాన్ని ‘భారత మాత’ అంటూ ప్రస్తావించడం సమంజసం కాదు" అని వ్యాఖ్యానించారు.
ఉయ్యాలవాడ నరసింహారెడ్డి చరిత్రపై పలు పరిశోధనా గ్రంథాలు వచ్చాయి. హంగేరికి చెందిన కేథరిన్ గెగ్ అనే చరిత్ర పరిశోధకురాలు భారతీయ రైతాంగ ఉద్యమాలపై చేసిన పీహెచ్డీ గ్రంథంలో ఉయ్యాలవాడ నరసింహా రెడ్డి గురించి ప్రస్తావించినట్టు తంగిరాల రచనలో పేర్కొన్నారు. అంతకుముందు గత ఒకటిన్నర శతాబ్దం పాటు ఆయన చరిత్ర పూర్తిగా జానపదుల పాటల రూపంలో ప్రచారంలో ఉంది. రేనాటి ప్రాంతంగా పిలుచుకునే నంద్యాల ప్రాంతంలో పలువురు కళాకారులు వివిధ పాటల్లో నరసింహారెడ్డి వీరత్వాన్ని కీర్తించడం నేటికీ కనిపిస్తుంది.
ఇక ప్రస్తుతం సినిమాగా రూపొందించడానికి దర్శకుడు సురేందర్ రెడ్డి సిద్ధం కావడం, నరసింహారెడ్డి పాత్రలో చిరంజీవి కనిపిస్తుండడంతో అందరి చూపూ నరసింహారెడ్డి ప్రస్థానంపై పడింది. అదే సమయంలో కుటుంబ సభ్యులు కూడా కొందరు తమ పూర్వీకుల చరిత్రను వక్రీకరిస్తున్నారని ఆరోపిస్తున్నారు. అంతేకాకుండా తమకు రాయల్టీ ఇవ్వాలని కూడా కోర్టులకు వెళ్లారు. సైరా అనే టైటిల్ కాకుండా ఉయ్యాలవాడ పేరుతోనే సినిమా రూపొందిస్తే బాగుండేదని ఉయ్యాలవాడ గ్రామానికి చెందిన షేక్ ఇమామ్ బీబీసీతో అన్నారు.
నరసింహారెడ్డికి పంచకళ్యాణి గుర్రం ఉండేది...
ఈస్ట్ ఇండియా కంపెనీతో యుద్ధానికి దిగిన నరసింహారెడ్డి తన పరిపాలనను గిద్దలూరు మండలం కొత్తకోట నుంచి సాగించారని స్థానికులు చెబుతున్నారు. 80 ఏళ్ల వృద్ధురాలు సుబ్బమ్మ బీబీసీతో మాట్లాడుతూ "కొత్తకోటలో నరసింహారెడ్డి చుట్టూ కందకం నిర్మించి, 12 ఫిరంగులతో బ్రిటిష్ వారితో యుద్ధం చేశారు. కోటలో ఉన్న ఫిరంగులు కాలక్రమంలో పోయాయి. ప్రస్తుతం ఒకటి మాత్రమే మా ఊరిలో మిగిలి ఉంది. నల్లమల అడవుల మధ్యలో మరో కోట కూడా ఉండేది. నరసింహారెడ్డి దగ్గర బలమైన జాగిలాలు, పంచ కళ్యాణి గుర్రం ఉండేవి. వాటి సాయంతో యుద్ధాలలో శత్రువులకు దొరక్కుండా దూసుకెళ్లేవారు. ఆ విషయాలను మా తాతలు మాకు ఎన్నోసార్లు చెప్పార"న్నారు.

"కుందూ నదికి ఇటువైపు మా గ్రామంలో ఆయన జన్మించారు. ఆ తర్వాత ఆయనను దత్తతకు ఇచ్చారు. దాంతో ఉయ్యాలవాడకు వెళ్లారు. నరసింహారెడ్డికి ముగ్గురు భార్యలుండేవారు. వారిలో రెండో భార్య కుటుంబ వారసులం మేము. ఇన్నాళ్లకు నరసింహారెడ్డి చరిత్రను సినిమాగా రూపొందించడం ఆనందంగా ఉంది. నరసింహారెడ్డి విగ్రహం పార్లమెంట్లో కూడా ఏర్పాటు చేయాలని కోరుతున్నాం" అన్నారు.
ఆయన పోరాటాన్ని తక్కువ చేయలేం..
ఉయ్యాలవాడ నరసింహారెడ్డి సాగించిన పోరాటాన్ని తక్కువగా భావించలేం అంటున్నారు చరిత్ర పరిశోధకులు శివ నాగిరెడ్డి. ఆయన బీబీసీతో మాట్లాడుతూ "ఉయ్యాలవాడ ఆనాటి బ్రిటిష్ ఈస్ట్ ఇండియా కంపెనీపై సాగించిన పోరాటం అసమాన్యం. దానిపై భిన్న వ్యాఖ్యానాలున్నాయి. అయినా నాటి గ్రామీణ ప్రాంత ప్రజలను సమీకరించి చేసిన యుద్ధాన్ని తక్కువగా చూడకూడదు. కోటలో ఆయన తలకాయను వేలాడదీసి, భవిష్యత్తులో మరెవరూ అలాంటి తిరుగుబాటు చేయకుండా హెచ్చరించే ప్రయత్నం జరిగింది. అది ఆయన వ్యక్తిగత ప్రయోజనాల కోసం చేశారా లేక కంపెనీ ఆధిపత్యం మీద సాగించిరా అన్నది పరిశీలించే కోణాన్ని బట్టి ఉంటుంది. కానీ ఆయన నాటి కంపెనీ పెత్తనం మీద ఎదురుతిరిగిన విషయం మాత్రం మరచిపోకూడదు" అని అభిప్రాయపడ్డారు.
