భారతీయ సంస్కృతికి అద్దం పట్టే విధంగా అత్యంత వైభవంగా జరుపుకునే పండుగలలో 'దీపావళి' ఒకటి. దీనిని రెండు రోజుల పండుగగా జరుపుకుంటూ ఉంటారు. ఆశ్వీయుజ మాస బహుళ చతుర్థశి నరక చతుర్థశిగాను, అమావాస్యను దీపావళి పుణ్యదినంగా భావించి ఆరోజు శ్రీ మహాలక్ష్మీపూజ జరిపి, రాక్షసుల బాధలు తొలగిన ఆనందాన్ని వ్యక్తపరచుటకై దీపాలంకరణలు చేసి బాణాసంచా కాలుస్తారు.

దీపం జ్యోతిః పరంబ్రహ్మ దీపం సర్వతమోపహమ్ |

దీపేన సాధ్యతే సర్వమ్ సంధ్యా దీప న్నమోస్తుతే ||

ఈ జ్యోతిని పరబ్రహ్మ స్వరూపంగా, మనోవికాసానికి, ఆనందానికి, నవ్వులకు, సజ్జనత్వానికి, సద్గుణ సంపత్తికి నిదర్శనంగా భావిస్తారు. ఈ రోజున మహాలక్ష్మీపూజ జరుపుకొనుటకు ఓ విశిష్టత గలదు.

పూర్వం దూర్వాస మహర్షి ఒకమారు దేవేంద్రుని ఆతిధ్యానికి సంతసించిన వాడై; ఒక మహిమాన్వితమైన ఒక హారాన్ని ప్రసాదించాడు. ఇంద్రుడు దానిని తిరస్కార భావముతో, తనవద్దనున్న ఐరావతము అను ఏనుగు మెడలో వేయగా అది ఆ హారాన్ని కాలితో తొక్కివేస్తుంది. అది చూచిన దుర్వాసుడు ఆగ్రహం చెంది దేవేంద్రుని శపిస్తాడు. తత్‌ఫలితంగా రాజ్యాధిపత్యం కోల్పోయి, సర్వసంపదలు పోగొట్టుకుని దిక్కుతోచక శ్రీహరిని ప్రార్థిస్తాడు. ఈ పరిస్థితిని గమనించిన శ్రీ మహావిష్ణువు దేవేంద్రుని ఒక జ్యోతిని వెలిగించి దానిని శ్రీమహాలక్ష్మీ స్వరూపంగా తలచి పూజించమని సూచిస్తాడు.

దానికి తృప్తి చెందిన లక్ష్మీ అనుగ్రహంతో తిరిగి త్రిలోకాధిపత్యాన్ని, సర్వసంపదలను పొంది దుర్వాసుని పాదాలపై పడతాడు. అనంతరం మహాలక్ష్మీతో! తల్లీ నీవు కేవలం శ్రీహరి వద్దనే ఉండుట న్యాయమా! నీ భక్తులను కరుణించవా? అంటాడు. అంత ఆ మాత, త్రిలోకాధిపతీ! నీవు అనుకున్నట్లు నా శ్రీహరి అంత సంకుచిత మనస్కుడు మాత్రం కాదు. నన్ను త్రికరణశుద్ధిగా ఆరాధించే భక్తులకు వారి వారి అభీష్టాలకు అనుగుణంగా మహర్షులకు మోక్షలక్ష్మీ రూపంగా, విజయాన్ని కోరేవార్కి విజయలక్ష్మీగా, విద్యార్థులు నన్ను ఆరాధిస్తే విద్యాలక్ష్మీగా, ఐశ్వర్యాన్ని కోరి ఆరాధించేవారికి ప్రసన్నమవుతానని దేవేంద్రుని సమాధానపరచింది, దానికి త్రిలోగాధిపతి కృతజ్ఞతాంజలి సమర్పించుకున్నాడు.

ఇక ఈ దీపావళి పండుగను దేవదానవులు పాలసముద్రాన్ని మధించినప్పుడు వచ్చిన దివ్యజ్యోతి ఈ జీవకోటికి వెలుగును ప్రసాదించిన విశిష్టమైన రోజుగా చెప్పబడింది.

శ్రీరామచంద్రుడు రావణ సంహారము గావించి సీతాదేవితో అయోధ్యకు చేరి పట్టాభిషిక్తుడైన శుభసందర్భంగా! శ్రీకృష్ణుడు సత్యభామా సమేతుడై లోకకంటకుడైన నరకాసురుని వధించినందుకు సంబరంగా! ఇలా ఈ దివ్య దీపావళిని దేదీప్యమైన దివ్యకాంతుల దీపాలను అలంకరించి బాణాసంచా కాలుస్తూ! అందరూ వారి వారి ఆనందాలను వ్యక్తపరుస్తూ ఉంటారు.

ఇక ప్రకృతిపరంగా ఆలోచిస్తే! ఈ కాలమందు సర్వ జీవులను వ్యాధిగ్రస్తులను చేసే కీటకాలు, పంటలను నాశనము చేసే క్రిమికీటకాలు అధికంగా ఉద్భవిస్తాయి. కనుక ఈ బాణాసంచా కాల్పులవల్ల కీటక సంహారం కలిగి ప్రజలకు అన్నివిధాల మేలు జరుగుటకే ఈ ఆచారం పెట్టి ఉంటారని పెద్దలు చెప్తూ ఉంటారు.

ఏ ఇంటి యందు దీపాలు సమృద్ధిగా వెలుగుతాయో! ఆ ఇంట శ్రీమహాలక్ష్మీ ప్రవేశిస్తుందని మనకు ఋగ్వేదం చెప్తోంది. అటువంటి పుణ్యదిన సాయం సంధ్యాకాలమందు లక్ష్మీస్వరూపమైన తులసికోట ముందు తొలుత దీపాలు వెలిగించి శ్రీమహాలక్ష్మీ అష్టోత్తర శతనామాలతో అందు వర్ణించిన విధంగాపూజ గావించి నివేదన చేసి

చతుర్భుజాం చంద్రరూపా మిందిరా మిందు శీతలామ్

ఆహ్లాద జననీం పుష్టి శివాం శివకరీం సతీమ్ ||

అని ధ్యానించి, ఈ సర్వప్రాణ కోటికి హృదయ తాపాలను పోగొట్టు సర్వసంపన్న శక్తివంతురాలుగా భావించి, పూజానంతరం గృహమంతా దీపాలంకృతం చేయుటవల్ల కాలి అందియలు ఘల్లుఘల్లుమన అన్నట్లు ఆ మహాలక్ష్మీ ప్రసన్నమౌతుందట! ఇలా రెండు రోజుల పండుగ నరక చతుర్థశి, దీపావళిలను విశేషంగా జరుపుకుని, శ్రీమహాలక్ష్మీని మన ముంగిటకు ఆహ్వానించేద్దాం.
