యముడు ప్రాణాలు తీసే దేవుడని మనకు తెలుసు. ఆయన మాట వింటే అందరూ భయపడతారు. కానీ యమధర్మరాజు కేవలం నిమిత్తమాత్రుడు. అన్నీ పరమశివుని ఆజ్ఞానుసారమే నిర్వర్తిస్తాడు. శివుని పూజించడానికి మనం పురాతన కాలం నుండి అనేక గుళ్లు, ఆలయాలు నిర్మించుకున్నాం. ఆయన కృపకు పాత్రులవుతున్నాం.
కానీ యముడికి మాత్రం ఆలయాలు చాలా అరుదు. ఉన్నా కూడా శివాలయంలో అంతర్భాగంగా ఉంటాయి. కానీ ఒకే ఒక చోట మాత్రం యముడు స్వయంగా నిర్మించిన సరస్సును యమునితో సమానంగా భావించి పూజిస్తారు. భక్తితో స్నానం ఆచరిస్తారు. అందులో స్నానం చేస్తే మృత్యుభయం పోతుందని నమ్మకం. తిరువైకావూర్లో యమధర్మరాజు దేవాలయం ఉంది. ఇక్కడ ప్రధాన దైవం పరమశివుడు. తమిళనాడులోని తంజావూరు జిల్లా తిరువైకావూర్ అనే చిన్న గ్రామంలో ఈ దేవాలయం ఉంది.
ఈ దేవాలయం నాలుగు దిక్కులా నాలుగు ద్వారాలు ఉంటాయి. పూర్వం ఇక్కడ ఓ సాధువు తపస్సు చేసుకొంటూ ఉండేవాడు. ఒకానొక రోజున ఓ వేటగాడు జింకను తరుముతూ ఈ ప్రాంతానికి వస్తాడు. దీంతో ఆ జింక ప్రాణ భయంతో ముని వద్దకు వచ్చి రక్షణ కోరుతుంది. ఆ సాధుజంతువు దీన స్థితికి చలించిపోయిన ముని ఓ పులిలా మారిపోతాడు.
అంతేకాకుండా ఆ వేటగాడిని అక్కడి నుంచి దూరంగా తరమడానికి వీలుగా గట్టిగా గాండ్రిస్తాడు. వెంటనే వేటగాడు దగ్గర్లో ఉన్న బిల్వ చెట్టు పైభాగంలోకి చేరుకొంటాడు. ఎంత సేపైనా పులి ఆ చెట్టు నుంచి దూరంగా వెళ్లదు. దీంతో ఆ వేటగాడు ఈ చెట్టు చిటారు కొమ్మకు చేరుకొంటాడు. సూర్యోదయం అయినా కూడా ఆ పులి అక్కడి నుంచి కదలదు. ఇక వేటగాడు రాత్రికి ఆ చెట్టు పైనే ఉండిపోవాలని నిర్ణయించుకొంటాడు. అయితే నిద్రపోయి ఆ మత్తులో కిందికి పడిపోతే పులి తనను తినేస్తుందని భయపడుతాడు.

నిద్ర రాకుండా ఉండటం కోసం ఒక్కొక్క బిల్వ పత్రాన్ని తుంచి కిందికి వేస్తాడు. ఆ పత్రాలు ఆ చెట్టు కింద ఉన్న శివలింగాన్ని తాకుతాయి. అదే రోజు శివరాత్రి. దీంతో రాత్రి మొత్తం ఆ వేటగాడు ఆ చెట్టు పైనే జాగారణ చేస్తూ శివలింగం పై ఆ పత్రాలను వేస్తూనే ఉంటాడు. దీంతో శివుడు అతని పూజకు మెచ్చుకొని అక్కడ ప్రత్యక్షమవుతాడు. శివుడిని చూసి పులి రూపంలో ఉన్న సాధువు, ఆ బోయవాడు స్తుతిస్తారు.
దీంతో మరింత ఆనందబరితుడైన పరమేశ్వరుడు వారికి మోక్షం అనుగ్రహిస్తాడు. శివుడి కృపకు పాత్రులైన ఆ ఇద్దరి ప్రాణాలను తీసుకెళ్లడానికి యముడు స్వయంగా ఇక్కడికి వస్తాడు. అంతేకాకుండా పరమేశ్వరుడి ఆజ్ఞ మేరకు వారి ఇద్దరి పేరుపై ఇక్కడ ఓ పెద్ద సరస్సును యముడు స్వయంగా నిర్మిస్తాడు.
యముడు నిర్మించిన ఈ సరస్సులో స్నానం చేస్తే మృత్యుభయం దూరమవుతుందని శివుడు అనుగ్రహమిస్తాడు. దీంతో అప్పటి నుంచి భక్తులు ఇక్కడ పవిత్ర స్నానాలు చేస్తుంటారు. కాగా విష్ణువు కూడా తనకు అంటిన ఓ శాప నివృత్తి కోసం ఈ సరస్సులో స్నానం చేశాడని పురాణ కథనం.
