మా ఊళ్లో సంక్రాంతి పండుగకు కోళ్లు, పొట్టేలు పందేలతో కోలాహలంగా ఉంటుంది. పందెపు కోళ్లను ఎంపిక చేయడంలో మా ఊరు తరాలు(వ్యక్తి పేరు) అందెవేసిన చేయి. కోడి పుంజును అన్ని రకాలుగా చూసి అది పందెంలో గెలుస్తుందో... లేదో అని కూడా చెప్పగల సత్తా తరాలు సొంతం. అందువల్లనే మా ఊరితో పాటు చుట్టుప్రక్కల ఊళ్లలోని వారు కూడా పందెపు కోడి పుంజులను ఎంపిక చేయటానికి ప్రత్యేకంగా తరాలగాడికోసం ఎదురుచూపులు చూస్తుంటారు. అలాంటి రోజుల్లో ఓ రోజు...

అబ్బియ్యో, తరాలుండాడా..?"
"
ఉండాడు. అదిగో... ఆ మొండి గోడకవకాడ పుంజుకు తౌడు పెడతన్నాడు. పిలుసుకొచ్చేదా" అన్నాడు ఆ పిల్లాడు.
"
వద్దులే నానే అక్కడికి బోతా" అంటూ మొండి గోడకేసి వెళ్లాడు వీరయ్య.
అక్కడ తరాలు కోపంతో ఊగిపోతున్నాడు. తన కోడి పుంజు వద్దకు పొరుగింటి పకీరయ్య పెట్టను వదిలాడట. దీనిగురించి పకీరయ్యతో వాదులాడుతున్నాడు. "ఏందే పకీరు మావా... నీకెన్నిసార్లు జెప్పాల. పుంజుకిందకి పెట్టను వదలమాకమని. పుంజు పెట్ట మీనకెల్లిందంటే పనికిమాలినదైపోద్ది. పందెంలో ఎదట కోడిమీన గెలవలేక పరారైపోద్ది. సివరసారిగా సెబుతన్నా. ఇంకోమాలి పెట్టను వదిల్తే... నా యాల్ది... పెట్టను సట్టిలో పెడతా. ఆనక నన్నేమన్నా అంటే ఒప్పుకోను" అని హెచ్చరించాడు.
ఇంతలో మున్నం వీరయ్య కలగజేసుకుని..." యాంది తరాలా...? పొద్దుటేల ఎవళ్ల మీన ఎగరతన్నావ్" అన్నాడు.
అడిగిన దానికి సమాధానం చెప్పకుండా.. "ఎప్పుడొచ్చావన్నా... దా.. కూకో. అమ్మేవ్ ముక్కాళ్ల పీట తీసకరా" అంటూ తన కూతురును కేకేశాడు తరాలు. "కూకోటం... గీకోటం లేదుగానీ... నక్కలోళ్లపాలెం దాకా పోయద్దాం... దా" అన్నాడు వీరయ్య.
ఎందుకో... అన్నాడు తరాలు

పాలెంలో పందెపు కోడ్ని కొందామని. డేగల్లాంటి పుంజులుండాయని మొన్న గాబ్రేలు సెప్పాడు. ఓ పాలి సూసొద్దామని"

సరే ఒత్తన్నా ఉండు" అంటూ తన కోడిపుంజును ఓ పెద్ద గంపలో పెట్టి బయల్దేరాడు. అలాగే ఎప్పట్నుంచే మా తాతయ్య మంచి కోడిపెట్టను తీసుకురమ్మని తరాలును అడుగుతున్నాడు. పుంజుకోసం వెళుతున్న అతను మా తాతతో... " కోటయ్య బాబాయ్... పుంజును జూద్దామని పాలేనికి పోతన్నాం. పెట్ట గావాలని ఎప్పుడ్నించో అడుగుతున్నావ్గా. డబ్బులిత్తే తెత్తా. అయితే నేనటునించి అటు మరపళోళ్ల పాలేనికి బోతా. నాతో నీ మనవడ్ని బంపిచ్చు. ఆడికి కోడిపెట్టను పట్టిచ్చి పంపుతా" అన్నాడు.
దీంతో మా తాత డబ్బులిచ్చి నన్ను తరాలుతో పంపాడు. నక్కలోళ్లపాలేనికి బయల్దేరిన మాకు ఆ ఊరి పొలిమేరనున్న బీడు పొలాల్లో గుంపులు గుంపులుగా తిరుగుతున్న కోళ్లు స్వాగతమిస్తున్నట్లుగా మహా సందడి చేస్తున్నాయి. తూర్పు దిక్కున సూర్యుడు సూటిగా కళ్లలోకి చూస్తున్నాడు. మున్నం వీరయ్య, తరాలు, నేను... ఆ కోళ్ల గుంపుకు దగ్గరయ్యాం. ఆ కోళ్ల గుంపులో ఓ కోడిని ఒడిసిపట్టుకున్న తరాలు...

అలా తరాలు ఓ చురుకైన కోడిపుంజును ఎంపిక చేసి అతనికి ఇచ్చాడు. తిరిగి ఇంటికి వస్తున్న తరాలకి ముసలయ్య ఎదురుపడ్డాడు. "ఏంది తరాలా...? ఈ యేడు గూడా ఆ ముసల కోడిపుంజుతోనే పందెం గాత్తన్నావా..? మన ఊరు పరువుదియ్యమాక. పందెంలో ఆ పుంజు నీలిగి నిమ్మాకేత్తద్ది. ఎల్లకిల్లా పడత్తద్ది. నా మాట యిని ఎదుళ్లిపిల్లి(వెదుళ్లపల్లి)లో మంచి కౌజులున్నాయంట.. ఓపాలి(సారి) పోయిరా. నీ పుంజు గనక ఓడిపోయిందనుకో... ఆనక మనం మొఖాన్ని ఎత్తక తిరగలేం.." అంటూ తరాల సమాధానాలను పట్టించుకోకుండా ఇంకా ఏదో గొణుగుతూనే వెళ్లిపోయాడు ముసలయ్య.
అంతే.. తరాలు కళ్లు ఎర్రబారాయి. తన కోడిని ముసలి కోడి అన్నందుకు నానా హంగామా చేయడం మొదలుపెట్టాడు. ఇంటికి వెళ్లాడో లేదో కట్టుగొయ్యకు కట్టేసిన కోడిపుంజు తాడును అమాంతం తెంపేసి పుంజుతో సహా ఊరి నడిబొడ్డున ఉన్న గంగిరావి చెట్టుకేసి బయల్దేరాడు. నాతోపాటు మిగిలిన పిల్లలందరం పుంజును ఏంచేస్తాడోనని అతణ్ణి అనుసరించాం.
చెట్టుకింద కూర్చుని పుంజు కాళ్లకు పొడవాటి తాళ్లను కట్టి చెట్టు మొదలుకు కట్టేశాడు. పిల్లల్లో ఒక పిల్లాడిని... " ఒరేయ్ మేకలోడా(అతని మారు పేరు)... మీ నాయన్ని నే పిలిశానని జెప్పి పిలసకరా. యిక్కడున్నట్టు రావాలా... పో... లగేయ్( పరుగెత్తు)" అని దగ్గర్లో ఉన్న బావిలోనుంచి నీళ్లు తోడి నోట్లో పోసుకుని కోడి ముఖం మీద తుంపర్లుగా ఊదడం మొదలు పెట్టాడు. ఇంతలో మేకలోడు వాళ్ల నాన్నను పిలుచుకు వచ్చాడు.
ఆయన్ని చూడగానే "ఏంది సిట్రాగవల( చిట్టి రాఘవులు) మావా... నా కోడి ముసల్దా... నువ్వే జెప్పు. దీని యిత్తనం గురించి నీకు దెలవదా. దీని తాతముత్తాతలు ఎట్టాటియ్యో సెప్పు. నువ్వట్టుండు... యిది ముసలదో... కుర్రదో యియ్యాలే దేల్చేత్తా. నీ కోడీ... సినపొండు(వ్యక్తి పేరు), డిరయ్య(వ్యక్తి పేరు) కోడి పుంజుల మీన యియ్యాలే నా కోడితో పందెమేత్తా. గెలిసిందా సరే. లేదంటే దీనెవ్వ... ఖైమా సేసి పారేత్తా.." అని పుంజుపై లాగి ఒక్కటిచ్చాడు. ఆ దెబ్బతో కోడిపుంజు రెక్కలు విప్పి పారిపోబోయింది.
చిట్టి రాఘవులు కలుగజేసుకుని... " అరేయ్ తరాలుగా.. యెందుకంత కోపం. మడిసికంత కోపం బనికిరాదు. ఆడెవెడో కోన్కిస్కాగోడు యేదో మాటన్నాడని ఎగురుతావెందుకు. నా కోడి ఇయ్యాల కూనారతాంది. పందెం... గిందెం నేనెయ్యను. యింకెవుళ్లుదైనా జూసుకో..." అన్నాడు. ఇంతలో చిన్నపొండు అనబడే వ్యక్తి కోడిపుంజు అటుగా వెళ్లడం గమనించాడు తరాలు. అంతే తన కోడిపుంజు కాలుకున్న తాడును ఊడదీసి ఆ కోడిపైకి విసిరేశాడు.
అంతే... రెండు కోడిపుంజులు ఎగిరెగిరి తన్నుకోసాగాయి. ఇది చూస్తున్న తరాలు... " ఎయ్ డేగా... ఇయ్యాల సిన్నపొండు కోడిని తన్నకపాయావో... నిన్ను సట్టిలో పెడతా...." అని సైడ్ డైలాగులు వెయ్యటం మొదలుపెట్టాడు. తన కోడిపుంజు చిన్నపొండు కోడిని దాదాపు ఓడించే దశలో ఉంది. ఎగిరెగిరి తంతోంది.
తరాలు సంతోషానికి అవధుల్లేవు.... రెండు కోళ్లూ పొడుచుకుంటూ ఎగిరెగిరి తన్నుకుంటుంటే తరాలు... " అదీ తన్ను... ఎయ్... ఎగిరి తన్ను... సిట్రాఘవుల మావా... సూడవే. నాది ముసల కోడా. నూకలు... తౌడూ రోజూ కుతికలకానా బెడతన్నా. సూత్తా వుండు... ఈ సుట్టు పక్కల పాలేల్లోని కోడి పుంజులను నా కౌజు మట్టగించకపోతే... నా మీసం గొరిగిచ్చుకుంటా... ఏందీ...యింటన్నావా..." అని అంటుండగా చిన్నపొండు కోడిపుంజును తరాలు కోడిపుంజు తరమసాగింది. ఆ దృశ్యాన్ని చూసిన తరాలు కడుపు చల్లారింది.
